Athena Henry
Age: 38
Law School: University of Illinois
Area of Practice: Employment/Civil Rights
Benassi & Benassi, P.C.
Athena Herman, a partner at Benassi & Benassi, P.C., won’t be outmaneuvered
when it comes to representing clients in employment discrimination, general
employment, and civil rights cases. From the EEOC, to the Illinois Human Rights
Commission, and all levels of state and federal courts, she counsels plaintiffs in individual, multi-plaintiff, and class action lawsuits.
Her successes, among others, include jury verdicts of $1.76 million in Albright v. Caterpillar (including $800,000 in punitive damages); $850,000 in David v. Caterpillar (including $750,000 in punitive damages); and a consent decree of $8.5 million in the two associated class action cases of Palmer v. Combined Insurance Company of America and Radmanovich v. Combined Insurance Company of America.

Even opponents recognize Herman’s skills. Julie Galassi of Hasselberg, Rock, Bell & Kuppler was the opposing counsel in a contentious sexual harassment case. Galassi says, “I have never had to work so hard to counter the issues and legal points she raised.” Nonetheless, Herman was always congenial. “Athena treated me with the utmost respect and maintained a high level of professionalism that I do not often see in these types of cases or from many lawyers,” Galassi says.
In addition to being a tough litigator, Herman gives back to her community. She received the 2001 John C. McAndrews Pro Bono Service Award, a statewide award by the Illinois State Bar Association given for extraordinary commitment to providing legal services to the poor.
